Akershus University Hospital is a regional emergency hospital, serving 340.000 inhabitants in the north eastern suburbs of Oslo. All somatic functions will be in the new buildings which include some 565 beds, 22 operating theaters and 21 radiology labs. The new building is built beside the existing hospital from the 1960s. The largest part of the existing buildings will be demolished. However, some 20.000 m2 will be renovated / reconstructed for non somatic functions, like administration, university functions, patient hotel etc.

The new building consists of a treatment part and a bed ward part connected with a glass roofed mall. The glass roofed mall has a front entrance building in one end and a children and youth clinic in the other end.

The architect and HVAC engineer have built complete BIM models of the whole new building, which have been used for quantity take off and clash detections, partly in their ordinary software, partly in third party software by using IFC.

Between 2003 and 2007, a separate R&D project was carried out for the front entrance building where also structure and electro were modeled as BIM models and all aspects of the technology were tested out. This includes clash detection between all disciplines, quantity take off, automatic cost estimates, energy calculation, electronic trade, simulation of electric systems, 4D (time scheduling), visualization etc.
