Brazil Joins buildingSMART International as a Chapter-In-Formation

London, (June 26, 2023) – buildingSMART International is pleased to announce that Brazil has been formally approved as a “Chapter-in-formation” by the Board at the International Council and Chapter Conference hosted in Slovenia, 19-21 June 2023.

The Board's approval follows a highly successful submission, and the new Chapter will be established under the BIMForum in Brazil and has a vision to promote the social, environmental, and economic benefits of open standards for infrastructure and building information in Brazil.

The Chapter aims to:

  1. promote collaboration among stakeholders, facilitating connectivity, process integration, and communication among all agents of the construction industry.
  2. foster integration between processes, technologies, and people through openBIM workflows.

The Brazilian government has taken a significant step by mandating the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in engineering projects and services conducted by federal agencies and entities. This decision has paved the way for the development of a comprehensive BIM roadmap for Brazil. As a result, numerous governmental bodies and federal agencies have issued regulations and normative acts to establish management committees responsible for implementing BIM initiatives. Notable examples include the Ministries of Defense, Infrastructure, and Regional Development, which have all outlined specific actions to drive BIM adoption and integration. The Chapter aims to continue the support and awareness for this initiative and to be a place to support the roadmap.

Clive Billiald, CEO of bSI commented that “This marks a significant step forward in the development of buildingSMART as we add Brazil – our first South American Chapter – to the network. As a new Chapter-in-formation, we are confident that this will enrich the openBIM community as they support the BIM Roadmap in country, helping digitalise the construction sector and ultimately leading to a more productive, sustainable built environment. We have been very impressed with the level of professionalism and alignment we see from BIMForum and we are confident they are the right group to lead activities in Brazil”.

Rodrigo Broering Koerich, President of BIM Fórum Brazil stated that "Becoming a buildingSMART Chapter in Brazil is a momentous occasion, as we join an international community dedicated to the promotion of openBIM for buildings and infrastructure. We bring valuable international experiences to share and support both government and private companies in their BIM implementation efforts, enabling them to enhance their competitiveness and productivity. As a Chapter, we are committed to assisting in the development of Brazilian BIM national standards and providing support to national application developers in adopting open standards."
