Where do you live?  

I live in the countryside in the greater Munich area. 

Work history 

am working in the fields of building informatics since 1985, the first 10 years in the AECOO software industry and since then as a professor and consultant. Since 1990, I have been expanding my experience in semantic product models and openBIM. 

How long have you been involved in openBIM and buildingSMART 

I am involved in the predecessor of open BIM since 1990 and in buildingSMART since the start of the organisation, when it was called IAI – Industry Alliance of Interoperability. 

What do you like the most about your work in your chapter 

Working together with an enthusiastic crowd of people on improving the AECOO industry with digitalisation. 

The greatest success achieved within your chapter 

  • Being recognized as THE competence network for openBIM in Germany 
  • Having achieved the professionalization of the chapter based on a growing membership with committed companies and people 
  • The very good relationship with government agencies 
  • The exellent cooperation with the standardisation organisation VDI 

What does openBIM mean to you 

Enabling consistent and widespread digitalisation for the AECOO industry. 

What is the biggest challenge the community is facing today 

Streamlining the diverse fields of interests and pulling into the same direction. 

What challenges do you encounter in your country 

  • Overcoming the resistance to introduce the latest digital achievements in the AECOO industry. 
  • Coordinating and implementing synergies of national developments with international ones. 

What are the main opportunities for your market? 

Overcoming inefficiency and waste by using the potential of digitalization. 

Digitalisation is more and more present today; what do you do in your chapter to meet the challenges it poses 

  • Bringing together the various stakeholders 
  • Providing a competence network 
  • Building think-tanks 
  • Communication 

What vision, as a chapter leader, would you give to the whole community 

Everyone in the AECOO industry will use the standards and solutions of buildingSMART. 

What is your overall vision of the future 

Speaking with the words of ShakespeareThere are more things digitalisation will bring to us, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

Resumé: 

Rasso Steinmann is a professor and consultant for building informatics and BIM. He received his Diploma in Civil Engineering at TU-Munich in 1985. For the first 10 years, he worked for Nemetschek as software developer and development manager and in 1996 was appointed professor at Munich University of Applied Sciences. In 2008, he founded the iabi - Institute of Applied building Informatics, which is supporting BIM-standardisation and the digital transformationSince 2013, he is chair of the VDI Coordination Circle BIM, which is developing the German national BIM-standard with the VDI 2552 series. He is also representing this function on the board of the VDI Society of Building and Building ServicesIn DIN, CEN and ISO he was and is working in several committeesIn buildingSMART he was leading the ISG – Implementer Support Group for 21 years, currently he is leading the software certification. He is serving on the board of the German chapter since it was established and is also serving on the board of buildingSMART-International since 2009. Since 2015, he was elected chairman of buildingSMART Germany.
