openBIMathon 2025

The openBIMathon is an innovative event organised by buildingSMART Spain. It challenges professionals and enthusiasts in the construction sector to implement openBIM workflows in a competitive and collaborative environment. The event is a team competition with the primary goal of promoting the quality of IFC models. It is suitable for individuals who regularly work with openBIM and want to demonstrate their capabilities, or for those who are unfamiliar with IDS or BCF but would like to learn.
The objectives include fostering the implementation of openBIM workflows, promoting the use of openBIM standards and services such as IFC, BCF, IDS, and bSDD, and increasing the quality of BIM models.
Participants, working in teams of three (with at least two present physically), will receive an IFC model and an information requirements document. They will need to digitalise the information requirements using IDS, potentially using bSDD for this purpose. Subsequently, they must validate the quality of the model and communicate detected issues using BCF. The task concludes with enriching the IFC models to resolve the identified issues. The event is primarily in person, although remote participation might be possible for some individuals.
A previous meeting and masterclass covering IDS, BCF, and bSDD will be held for selected teams on 14 May. At the end of the competition, teams must submit the generated IDS, the enriched IFC model, and an incident report. The winning team will receive a trophy, free buildingSMART Spain membership for a year, and an invitation to present their work at buildingSMART Spain’s annual event.
Anticipated learning outcomes include gaining practical experience in applying openBIM standards and workflows, improving skills in model validation and issue management using tools like IDS and BCF, and understanding how to enrich IFC models
