Iceland and Kazakhstan Join buildingSMART International as Developing Chapters

London, March 12, 2024 – buildingSMART International is thrilled to announce that the Board has officially approved the status of Developing Chapter for both Iceland and Kazakhstan. These significant milestones were achieved on March 11, 2024, during the International Summit held in Valencia.

Iceland

BIM Iceland, a non-profit organization with 27 dedicated members, represents companies from the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector, along with public entities based in Iceland. Led by a board of nine passionate individuals, BIM Iceland is committed to aligning its activities with the international program. Their overarching goal is to establish BIM (Building Information Modeling) as the standard practice for constructing major public structures across Iceland.

"We're thrilled to achieve this milestone, highlighting our dedication to advancing openBIM practices in Iceland. With our board and member organizations' commitment, we're ready to promote and drive openBIM adoption throughout our nation”, says Davíð Friðgeirsson, chair of the board of BIM Iceland.

Kazakhstan

The Kazakh Research and Design Institute of Construction and Architecture, founded in 1931, will serve as the home base for the new chapter in Kazakhstan. This dynamic group has established the Commission for the Development of the Regulatory and Technical Framework in the Field of Information Modeling Technology in Construction. As part of the implementation of the “Action Plan for the Introduction of Information Modeling Technology in the Design of Construction Facilities (BIM)”, they are poised to drive the adoption of openBIM practices in the country.

These exciting developments mark a significant step forward in advancing the use of openBIM methodologies in both Iceland and Kazakhstan. We look forward to the collaborative efforts of these chapters as they contribute to the global growth of digital construction practices.

Alexander Shakhnovich, Managing Director for development of KazRiCA/ and the Chapter Director commented that “leveraging the legacy of the Kazakh Research and Design Institute of Construction and Architecture, we are applying the openBIM concept to redefine the digital future of our industry.

Our mission is clear: to lead Kazakhstan to a new era of efficiency and innovation in construction. By becoming part of the buildingSMART community, we can be sure that through cooperation and commitment to world standards we will be able to achieve impressive results in the field of digital construction.»

Zarina Kabzhan, Head of construction management department of KazRICA/Program manager commented that "establishing the Kazakhstan buildingSMART Chapter will enhance both professional training and university programs, serving as a key driver in the industry's digital transformation."

Aidan Mercer, Marketing Director, bSI commented that “we were impressed by both Iceland and Kazakhstan’s submissions, capturing the essence of openBIM in both submissions and the desire to collaborate with the international community”.
