Outcomes of the Board, International Council and Chapter Conference, and Asia Summit 2024

London, U.K. – June 26th, 2024 – The buildingSMART International (bSI) Board, International Council and Chapter Conference took place between 18-21 June 2024 in Hong Kong, with a variety of announcements and news to be shared with the buildingSMART community. This event was also combined with the inaugural buildingSMART International Asia Summit, which connected international attendees with local markets in Hong Kong and neighbouring countries.

Overview

The event took place at the Crowne Plaza in Kowloon East district of Hong Kong. The Hong Kong, China Chapter hosted the week with many highlights. There was a global list of participants from across the industry, discussing the role and value of openBIM, and key resolutions from the International Council that will help support the growing demands and needs for the built environment.

International Council

The buildingSMART International Council was attended by Full and Developing Chapters, Chapters-in-Formation, the Board, and bSI management office staff.

The meeting included updates from the bSI management office, governance and financial updates, voting procedures for the Annual Report, Board Nominations, and the Nominations Committee Membership. There were also presentations on other topics, including Chapter best practice. Resolutions from the International Council are summarised below:

1. Annual Report for 2023 – approved.

2. Approval for Board changes: Frank Hovorka, Alar Jost, Anna Moreno and Rasso Steinmann have stood down as Board Members. Najib Adouane and Eduard Dischke are appointed as new Board Members – approved.

3. Jugal Makwana to replace Rasso Steinmann as Vice Chair – approved.

4. David Whittleton nominated as a non-Chapter-affiliated Board member – approved.

5. Jøns Sjøgren steps down as Chair of the Nominations Committee, with Birgitta Schock replacing him as Chair. Casey Rutland to join Patrick MacLeamy, Birgitta Schock and Menno de Jonge as the Nominations Committee for 2024-2025 – approved.

Board Meeting

The Board met to discuss the outgoing members and the proposed new Board members for consideration from the International Council. They also discussed progress against strategic priorities, future ways of working, the nomination of a new non-affiliated director, and some new Chapters for consideration.

The buildingSMART International Asia Summit 2024

At the same time, buildingSMART Hong Kong, China hosted the inaugural buildingSMART International Asia Summit from June 17-18, 2024. Developed in collaboration with the buildingSMART China Chapter, the event welcomed numerous Chapters from various economies, along with local attendees and participants from neighbouring countries, all focused on the topic of openBIM.

The event's theme, “Accelerating openBIM Adoption for Smart Cities and Sustainability,” featured a diverse range of topics, including “Why IFC,” “Smart Cities and Sustainability,” “Next Gen Thinking,” and a “Government Symposium.” Through a mix of keynotes, panels, and open discussions, the summit highlighted the value and benefits of openBIM. Speakers and attendees concurred that recent advancements in standards and services are significantly impacting and enhancing the industry.

The summit also included a gala dinner and a local awards ceremony to celebrate best practice from local projects. The high quality of expertise in the use of openBIM was evident, maintaining the tradition of excellence in the field.

Strategic Projects

At the international council and Chapter Conference, bSI is pleased to announce that China Railway BIM Alliance (CRBIM) have committed to providing funding and support for the Strategic Project “Professional Certification”. This important milestone will help to accelerate the development and provision of enhanced international training and certification for personnel working with openBIM standards and services.
