Call for Participation – Development of a Process Map and Information Lifecycle Management
The activity is related to the Development of a Process Map and Information Lifecycle Management boosting efficiency and productivity for buildings, infrastructure, industrial facilities and information management.
The true value of digital data across an object's lifecycle lies in its dynamic application across various scenarios, not just static documentation.
To address this, buildingSMART International's Product Domain proposes a project to develop a comprehensive process map to analyze information lifecycles within specific processes and use cases. This recognizes untapped efficiency potential beyond "design and build" phases.
- The initiative aims for greater transparency and visibility of product data throughout the industry, spanning from generic object specifications to specific product details.
- This approach will highlight the roles of financing, purchasing, logistics and engineering, as well as the importance of material and product re-use and recycling in future construction projects.
- There is a need to involve a wider range of stakeholders, including funding entities, wholesalers, manufacturers, and engineers, to drive progress in the construction industry.
Advanced Object Identification Model for Construction Objects and Products
The DSCiBE (Digital Supply Chain in Built Environment) working group aligns with this initiative, expanding its focus beyond "design and build" to processes and use cases that provide significant value in shaping future standards. Circular economy principles and sustainability are central, emphasizing the early involvement of product manufacturers and engineers in the design process to optimize projects, supply chains, and sustainability efforts.
Other benefits and deliverables expected from this project include:
- Emphasis of the impact of digitization on supply chains, especially in light of the revised CPR (Construction Products Regulation), which now covers 3D-printed products, re-used items, prefabricated houses, and services. Manufacturers face increased environmental obligations and labeling requirements, where standards and digital tools play a vital role in compliance and cost reduction.
- Highlighting the rise of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and their potential to become mandatory, with standards facilitating product differentiation and environmental footprint assessment. Effective information lifecycle management can even support obtaining Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) credits for certifications in building & construction.
- Delivery of an Industry Report will stress the need for a common, open format for publishing processes and use cases adaptable to specific domains. Process modeling serves various crucial purposes, including identifying inefficiencies, simplifying complex ideas, improving communication, and aiding decision-making. It is intended that the report will provide a step-by-step approach to process modeling.
- Recognizing credibility challenges in the process definition and modeling, the project will aim to engage with a wide range of industry networks for the required support. An adequate funding and involvement of experienced industry and technical experts is required as essential components to effectively manage this complex initiative.
This initiative is set out in more detail in the approved activity proposal which is available to read here.
The next step is to assemble a project team and sponsorship for the project. If you are interested in taking part, please email bSI at contact@buildingsmart.org and we will be in contact with you.
