Maritime Domain

Purpose

The World Bank defines the blue economy as the sustainable use of ocean resources to benefit economies, livelihoods, and ocean ecosystem health. Maritime’s engineering contribution is substantial, promoting the health of ocean environments.

The Maritime Domain is a specialised division within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry dedicated to the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of infrastructure in marine environments. This includes facilities such as wind turbines, sea farms, immersed tunnels, coastal defences, and offshore platforms.

The initiative envisions a digitally transformed maritime sector, guided by the principles of the Blue Economy and driven by the universal adoption of openBIM standards to enhance industry efficiency, sustainability, and collaboration. Embracing interoperability, innovation, and collaboration, this vision aligns with bSI’s mission to drive digital transformation in the AEC industry through open digital standards.

There are numerous opportunities to use ocean resources effectively, and through international collaboration, the Domain aims to ensure the best decisions are made with productivity and sustainability as key focuses.

To understand the Maritime Domain mission and purpose in more detail please refer to the Maritime Domain Charter. The Maritime Domain Roadmap contains a more detailed view of the scope and deliverables of the Maritime Domain including projects, structure and governance.

Steering Committee

The Maritime Domain is led by a Steering Committee composed of representatives from international members. The Committee establishes a roadmap that responds to domain requirements, facilitates projects, leads sessions at buildingSMART summits, interacts with the Standards Committee, and ensures the buildingSMART Process is followed. Opportunities for new members are available, with appointments made by the Standards Committee Executive.
