The buildingSMART Board and Strategic Advisory Council
London, U.K. – July 5, 2022 – The buildingSMART International Council, Board and Strategic Advisory Council meetings took place between 27-29 June with a variety of announcements, updates, and news to be shared.
Overview
The event was the first in-person meeting for three years since the COVID-19 outbreak and took place in Zug, Switzerland, at the Siemens headquarters. The Swiss Chapter hosted the event with SBB and Siemens providing sponsorship. There was a record attendance for a Council meeting with over 80 attendees from across the globe. Attendees came from Chapters, prospective new Chapters, Board members, Strategic Advisory Council representatives, guests, and bSI and bSCH staff. Several attendees and Chapters were absent due to travel restrictions, Covid exposure or flight cancellations.
International Council
The buildingSMART International Council comprises Full and Developing Chapters, Chapters in-formation, guests, the Board, and bSI management office staff. This International Council meeting was dedicated to the late Chief Executive, Richard Petrie, who sadly passed away in April.
The meeting included corporate updates from the management office, governance updates, financial updates, voting procedures for the Annual Report, Board Nominations, and presentations on other topics. 13 of the 17 Full Chapters voted with the results found below:
- Annual Report for 2021 – approved.
- Approval for Board changes. Christophe Castaing, Karin Anderson, and Dirk Schaper have stood down, being replaced by Frank Hovorka, Alar Jost, and Anna Moreno – approved.
- The re-appointment of Jøns Sjøgren, Patrick MacLeamy, Birgitta Schock, Menno de Jonge as the Nominations Committee for 2022-2023 – approved.

Board
The Board meeting included applications for three Developing Chapters in Portugal, Romania, and Morocco which were approved. There was also approval for two Full Chapters in the USA and Hong Kong. There was an agreement for a new subsidiary in the Netherlands for bSI as the United Kingdom is now outside the European Union. Richard Kelly was also approved as the Company Secretary. This was also the final meeting for three Board members, Christophe Castaing, Karin Anderson, and Dirk Schaper. buildingSMART International would like to thank Karin, Dirk, and Christophe for their hard work and welcome Frank, Alar, and Anna as new Board members. Finally, there was an agreement to appoint Cormis Partners to conduct a global search to find a new CEO to replace the late Richard Petrie.
Strategic Advisory Council (SAC)
As part of buildingSMART International's Strategic Membership, the “SAC” meets twice a year to discuss the future direction of the community. Representations from Arup, Autodesk, China Communications Construction Company Ltd., China Railway BIM Alliance, Nemetschek Group, Oracle Construction and Engineering, Schneider Electric, Siemens, and Trimble all provided input, feedback, and discussion on topics such as software certification, IFC 4.3 project updates, how to accelerate new business models and open discussions. In addition, there were guests from Petrobras who shared some sub-surface use cases for openBIM.
